Abstract
Marked quantitative shifts in oropharyngeal bacterial microflora occur after adenotonsillectomy. The trend in shift of oral microflora is toward a more physiologic state. One mechanism of control is bacterial antibiosis, by the alpha hemolytic streptococci. Qualitative changes in normal resident bacterial oropharyngeal microflora did not occur. Qualitative changes in abnormal (pathogenic) oropharyngeal bacterial microflora previously reported, were again confirmed in a similar patient sample.
