Abstract
The psychosocial elements of dementia range from the emotional responses seen in the person with a dementing illness to the broad societal questions of financing long-term care for the cognitively impaired elderly. The author outlines a number of current psychosocial dilemmas posed by the dementias and reviews what is currently known about them.
