Abstract

The authors studied 169 randomly chosen patients in a private family practice to measure the level of psychological symptomatology and determine whether there was a correlation between symptomatology, as measured on the symptom checklist (SCL-90-R), and patients’ difficulty in communicating significant aspects of their complaints to the physician or in understanding his instructions for treatment. The results suggest that as many as half the patients seen in this setting may have such communication problems, which can interfere with effective diagnosis and therapy. The SCL-90-R is a quickly administered and easily scored test that can screen for both psychopathology and communication problems in a family practice.
