Abstract

The postoperative management of cardiac surgery patients is not straightforward and demands key insight into the physiologic perturbations common within this population. Furthermore, considerations in the immediate perioperative period change as the patient recovers from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). In order to ensure stability throughout this transition, the critical care team must have a firm understanding of the various consequences of intraoperative decisions and how to manage them following surgery.
