Abstract

I. INTRODUCTION Care of patients with traumatic injuries has evolved dramatically within the past decade. The tenets of trauma management, however, remain virtually unchanged. Reevaluation of trauma protocols has yielded standardized methods of treating patients with multiple injuries. The severity of injury and complexity of polytrauma demands a systematic approach to treatment. Applying the principles of orthopedic polytrauma to patients with severe open injuries allows the surgeon to predict outcomes.
