Abstract

This chapter outlines the current approach and the evolution in the assessment of trauma patients from a familiar “ABC” approach to the “MABCD” approach adopted throughout this textbook. The sequence of assessment, intervention and then progression through subsequent stages is explained and the rationale outlined. Each section has a brief overview of key points that is dealt with more fully in the dedicated chapters that follow, with key papers outlining core principles highlighted within this overview. The focus is mainly on clinical signs and their interpretation as they relate to traumatic injuries.
