N1 - Funding Information: There are many who deserve the credit for the success of this decades-long Geriatrics for Specialists Program: the leaders, staff, and board of the AGS; the program officers, board, and staff of the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Atlantic Philanthropies; the Council of the Geriatrics for Specialists Initiative; the program officers of the NIA/NIH; the leaders of the specialty societies involved in this initiative; and the hundreds of geriatricians and specialists involved in the program. I am inspired by their vision, dedication, and altruism. They are certainly pioneers in aging. AGS staff Marianna Drootin and, early in the project, Janet Eisner were the dedicated administrators who kept the program on course. Susan Zieman, MD, PhD, program officer of the NIA/NIH, deserves great credit for her enthusiastic and altruistic leadership of GEMSSTAR and ClinStar programs. Funding Information: This aspect of the GSI was accomplished by sponsoring a competitive grant for career development, Jahnigen Scholars, funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and Atlantic Philanthropies. These 2‐year grants were similar to an NIH career development award requiring a mentor and matching funds. The Jahnigen Scholarship component of the GSI, over the years, generated a cadre of young scholars who began their academic career with a focus on the geriatric aspect of their discipline. These geriatric champions generated substantial scholarship and additional funding. After the scholars established the success of this component of the GSI and its sister program for medical specialties, Williams Awards, they became the basis for a program of the NIA/NIH: Grants for Emerging Medical and Surgical Specialists Transitioning to Aging Research, GEMSSTAR (Table 2 ). 4,6,7 8 9–11
