Abstract

Over the past two decades, there have been substantial improvements in the mortality and morbidity associated with the management of congenital heart disease. Many factors have been responsible, including improvements in surgical procedures and techniques, modifications to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and advances in diagnostic and interventional cardiology. Equally important has been the development of specialized pediatric cardiac intensive care for the preoperative management of complex and challenging patients who range in age from preterm neonates to adults.
