Abstract

With few exceptions, streets, highways, and motor vehicles have been engineered to promote more efficient transportation rather than to protect the safety of pedestrians. As a result, traffic-related injuries to children predominate as the most serious child health problem in Western society. To understand the problem of pedestrian injuries and implement effective strategies, clinicians and public health workers must begin to work with engineers, safety officials, and city planners who dominate this field. The purpose of this paper is to review the epidemiology of pedestrian injuries and introduce clinicians to the literature on pedestrian traffic safety and child behavior.
