Abstract

PANDAS is the acronym for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infection. It requires an abrupt onset and repeat exacerbations of tics/obsessive-compulsive behaviors occurring in temporal association with a Group A β-hemolytic streptococcal infection (GABHS). Since its initial description, investigators have been actively seeking to confirm diagnostic criteria, validate the temporal association of GABHS, document abnormalities of immune markers, and establish an association between infection-related clinical exacerbation and alterations in the level of antineuronal antibodies or cytokines. Clinical and scientific investigations are useful to support or refute the diagnosis of PANDAS.
