Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging has become the modality of choice to examine the sellar region. Optimization of techniques allows for a high-resolution, detailed examination of the sella contents. Further refinements with fast scan acquisition enable the differential temporal enhancement of adenomas, normal pituitary tissue, and the cavernous sinus, therefore increasing the sensitivity of adenoma detection and assessment of cavernous sinus extension. Fat saturation sequences are particularly useful in examining the postoperative patient. In summary, optimization of magnetic resonance techniques has become an essential part of the armamentarium in the examination of patients with sellar lesions.
