Abstract
Experimental data are given on light scattering and electron microscopic evidence of the light transmission behavior of the collagen fibrils that are embedded in an optically homogeneous ground substance in the cornea of the eye. Theoretical attempts to explain corneal transparency and its loss during swelling of the cornea must account for short-ranged ordering of fibrils in normal healthy corneas and for formation of regions void of fibrils when swelling occurs.
