Abstract

Ocular activity (SEM and/or REM) is quite common in Stage REM and drowsy Stage 1, but is normally minimal in Quiet Sleep (Stages 2, 3, and 4). While investigating alcohol related sleep disturbances, the authors noted that several patients exhibited a large number of eye movements in Quiet Sleep. This report, based on data collected as a part of these investigations during periods of programmed alcohol ingestion and withdrawal, presents a quantitative analysis of this Quiet Sleep ocular activity.
