Abstract

Nitrofurantoin given intravenously commencing with the beginning of a transurethral resection may well reduce the immediate postoperative morbidity in the infected as well as the noninfected patiet. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections due to susceptible organisms repond better o treatment with macro crystalline nitrofurantoin than to microcrystalltine nitrofurantoin, presumably on the basis of better patient compliance. It is assumed that this improved compliance is directly related to markedly better gastrointestinal tolerance. A close relationship between recurrent urinary tract infections and intestinal disorders was shown previously and was found to repond well to an intermittent dose schedule with macrocrystalline nitrofurantoin. The drug appeared to be effective regardless of its predetermined disc sensitivities.
