This article contains the result of a conference held in October 1975, in which, after a historical overview, the following subjects were discussed: the method used for measuring local cerebral glucose utilization; the application to the coupling of cerebral metabolism and blood flow; the relation of central nervous system glucose metabolism to neuronal structure; regional cerebral glucose consumption rates in some experimental states; application of the method to human cerebral dysfunction; and, the possible involvement of cerebral glucose 6 phosphatase in 2 deoxy d glucose phosphorylation. A bibliography of about 130 titles is added.
