Abstract

The authors investigated the possibility of controlling individual fingers in a hand prosthesis with electromyogram (EMG) signals. They measured integrated EMG signals from sites on the anterior and posterior surfaces of the forearms of several normal human subjects. Analysis of variance and a range comparison test were used to identify sites specific for thumb flexion and ring finger flexion. These results may be used to control a two fingered claw by means of surface EMG activity.
