Abstract
Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is an increasingly common and severe complication of HIV infection that is associated with shortened survival. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, prevention guidelines, and treatment options for the disease are provided. Statistics given show estimates of AIDS or ARC patients developing MAC infection by baseline CD4+ count, and a list of the body organs most commonly involved with dissemination of MAC, as well as areas that may become infected. First- and second-line therapies are outlined.
