Abstract
The phase stability of phospholipid monolayers at a variety of solid-liquid interfaces after transfer from a liquid-gas interface has been investigated. A major structural modification of such layers during and after transfer to hydrophobic substrates is observed by means of a fluorescence staining technique. In this Letter we present a preliminary report of our observations. An idealized model is introduced to discuss the transfer process and to provide a qualitative description to account for the observed phenomena.
