Abstract
As a neuronal messenger molecule, Nitric Oxide (NO) carries out the signaling tasks by diffusing in the extracellular space surrounding the neurons. To understand diffusion process of this messenger molecule in the brain, we have developed two theoretical models that describe the concentration profiles of NO when generated from single or multiple sources. The multi-source model is developed using a bidomain concept in which multiple NO source and non-source regions are separately considered. With these models, the diffusion times and concentration profiles of NO in the extracellular space are derived.
