Abstract
The hypothesis that the propagation of chondrocytes in microcarrier spinner cultures enhances the synthesis of the proteoglycans characteristics of the articular cartilage was evaluated. Experiments were conducted wherein non-fibrillated articular cartilage obtained from osteoarthritic patients were seeded with enzymatically isolated chondrocytes. The results indicate that the hypothesis is generally true for a number of microcarrier spinner cultures.
