Abstract
The Micro-Mental Test has been developed as a short version of the Mini-Mental-Status Examination (MMSE). We examined the reliability and diagnostic validity of a German version (MikroMental Test). We administered the MMSE, and the German version of the MikroMental Test, to 125 patients of a geriatric psychiatry hospital with the diagnosis of dementia (mean age 77.8 ± 8.0 years), and 77 persons without such diagnosis (mean age 71.1 ± 7.0 years), comprising 43 healthy older adults (mean age 69.7 ± 6.8 years). Diagnoses made by an experienced psychiatrist according to ICD-10 criteria served as external criterion. The mean duration for testing with the Micro-Mental-Test was 8, with the MMSE 15 minutes. Test-retest analyses showed satisfactory reliability. With regards to sensitivity and specificity, we found comparable diagnostic validity for the MMSE and the Mikro-Mental Test. We suggest that, due to its brevity and diagnostic validity, the Mikro-Mental Test is a useful tool for dementia screening in an outpatient setting.
