Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a breathing disorder that often coexists with visceral obesity. In this chapter, we examine bidirectional associations between obesity, OSA, and metabolic syndrome. Specifically, we will provide an overview of sleep apnea; an overview of obesity, visceral obesity, and metabolic syndrome; evidence showing that visceral obesity predisposes to OSA; evidence showing that OSA aggravates metabolic dysfunction; and clinical implications of this relationship.
