Abstract

MEOPA is gas mixture with 50% nitrogen protoxide and 50% oxygen. It is widely used for analgesia, particularly for short painful interventions. The low solubility in blood and tissues of nitrogen protoxide produces pharmacokinetic properties leading to rapidly reversible effects. The equimolar formulation with oxygen allows safe use outside the operating room by non-anesthesists and for non-fasting patients. Adverse effect are exceptional and always minor. The mechanisms of the analgesic effects are imperfectly understood but the endogenous opioid system and activation of descending nonadrenergic pathways are involved. We discuss the principal theoretical and practical aspects of MEOPA for the treatment of pain.
