Abstract
Sixty-five Medicare-covered heart transplants during the first year and 143 by the fifth year are the focus of this article. The author summarizes assumptions used to forecast program enrollment and then identifies recent developments that may affect actual results. He then reviews recent data on heart transplants performed and concludes with a 'back-of-the-envelope' projection for Medicare-covered heart transplants in fiscal year 1991.
