Medical Standards for Eye Banking

Eye banking medical standards are designed to insure a supply of safe and efficacious tissue. They vary from country to country but tend to promote similar goals: prevention of systemic or local disease transmission, suitability of tissue for its intended use, and safety of eye bank personnel and clinical staff. In the United States, eye banks are subject to regulation by the Food and Drug Administration, State law, and the Eye Bank Association of America. Standards are constantly evolving in response to emerging surgical procedures, tissue processing techniques, and potentially transmissible diseases.
