Medical image analysis: State of the art and future directions

This Paper surveyed the major progress in medical image analysis including these classic research topics: mathematical model, ROI(region of interesting) segmentation and analysis, image registration and fusion, functional analysis of temporal image sequences. Further more, based on the recent advances in this field, we also briefly introduced the advance in following topics: the content based image retrieval system from medical image, the construction of standard medical image test databases and evaluation methodology and the commercial medical image analysis software. In the end, we summarized some challenges faced by medical image analysis community and pointed out some directions for future research.
