Abstract

We have demonstrated that treatment with either superoxide dismutase, a scavenger of superoxide radicals, or allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, significantly increases the survival of island skin flaps following ischemia. We further investigated the mechanism of ischemia/reperfusion injury following a prolonged arteriovenous occlusion in island skin flaps in rats.
