Abstract
Considerable investigative effort has been directed toward the analysis of the distribution of stress and strain in skeletal bone. This investigation determines the feasibility of using the photoelastic coating technique in the evaluation of the distribution and magnitude of the principal stresses in fresh femurs under conditions simulating weight bearing. The photoelastic coating technique offers a number of advantages over traditional methods of measuring strain in bone. A topographic pattern of strain magnitude can be obtained for the entire area coated. The coating can be applied to the ridges and crevices found in normal bone. There is no problem of directional placement as is required for strain gauges, and it can be used in static or dynamic applications.
