Abstract

Life, limb, and eyesight are the three emergency conditions that require immediate attention. Ocular injuries have been the fourth most common injury during Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF). Despite this, battlefield eye injuries often go unrecognized. Even when an eye injury is recognized, it is often managed incorrectly. Incorrect management of eye injury can lead to permanent vision loss, causing significant lifelong morbidity. This chapter reviews the performance of expedient eye exams, identification and management of key ocular injuries requiring emergent intervention by non-ophthalmologists, and how to protect the eyes when transporting patients with injured eyes.
