Abstract

We assessed the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) caused by gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis and herpes simplex virus 2, genital ulcer disease and discharge/dysuria, and the incidence of HIV in circumcised and uncircumcised men in a Ugandan cohort study. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of STIs or genitourinary symptoms, but HIV incidence was significantly lower in circumcised men. The preputial mucosa is probably an important target tissue for HIV, but not other STIs.
