Abstract
Lymphocytes are small, mononuclear white blood cells that bear cell surface receptors specific for particular antigenic determinants. They enlarge and proliferate when they encounter their specific antigen. The two major classes of lymphocytes - B cells that mature in the bone marrow and T cells that receive further education in the thymus - mediate antibody-mediated and cell-mediated immunity, respectively. © 2007
