Abstract

In order to successfully treat pediatric headache, practitioners must take into account the influence of lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, hydration, and exercise. Assessing and addressing these factors can produce improvement in pediatric headache patients with or without pharmacological intervention. Further, a number of complementary and alternative therapies (CATs), which have demonstrated robust efficacy in the reduction of headache symptoms, are available to pediatric patients. A brief review of popular nutraceuticals and their accompanying risks and benefits is also presented. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide information on headache lifestyle factors, CATs, and nutraceuticals in order to expand the repertoire of the provider and to optimize treatment of pediatric headache. A case vignette is presented to illustrate how these concepts may be applied in the clinical setting.
