Abstract
Left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) has been implicated in a variety of verbal and nonverbal tasks. In this chapter, we review the literature on VLPFC's involvement in the processing of words and sentences in comprehension and production. In so doing, we compare a number of semantic and syntactic accounts proposed to explain the role of this region. We conclude that the sum total of the empirical evidence points to VLPFC's role in biasing competition between alternative representations during selection.
