Abstract

This chapter begins with a brief history of the emergence of AIDS and HIV. It then discusses the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). It argues that in twenty-five years since the first report of HIV, the effect of HAART to improve the prognosis of HIV-infected patients has not reached far beyond the industrialized world, despite recent political will, an influx of resources and bilateral and international efforts. The International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care's (IAPAC) historic symposium in 2006 entitled, 'Decade of HAART', from which this book of based, is described.
