Abstract
An integrated saturable absorber was demonstrated which employs spatial solitons. It has potential advantages over conventional saturable absorbers, in that the response time is essentially instantaneous, the linear loss is low approx. 0.1 cm-1 and the response can be designed by varying the waveguide structure. The device could also be modified to produce an all-optical signal router using the interaction forces between solitons.
