Initiatives to promote adherence in HIV-infected patients

Potent antiretroviral drug regimens have provided new opportunities to treat patients with HIV disease effectively. Yet, the true potential of the combination therapies can be realized only if people living with HIV adhere to the difficult treatment regimens. Even brief intervals of suboptimal dosing may allow activation of viral replication and development of drug- resistant viral strains. Maximizing adherence and achieving the full potential of the antiretroviral therapies in practice settings demand multidimensional initiatives that address complex behavioral and biomedical issues.
