Inguinal Hernia Repair: Selecting a Repair

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Numerous surgical approaches are at the disposal of the general surgeon in the treatment of the inguinal hernia. Surgeon preference and experience typically dictate the type of repair that is offered to patients, and in the current climate of fiscal constraint, economic factors play an increasing role in this decision-making. Patient-centered decision-making is facilitated by a broad knowledge of historical techniques utilized in hernia repair as well as working knowledge of current literature. An individualized approach should take into consideration patient factors and preferences along with the hernia characteristics, the level of contamination, and acuity.
