Infectious Diseases and Sleep

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Chapter

Abstract

Patients with infectious diseases, including acute viral illnesses, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and related conditions, and viral hepatitis, may have significant problems with insomnia and hypersomnolence. These problems can occur due to either the infection itself or the associated treatments. Studies in animals have revealed that the precise characteristics of infection-related changes in sleep vary with the specific microorganism, the route of infection, the genetic background of the host, and differences in the disease process. This overview focuses on how four viral infections - HIV, Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and viral respiratory tract infections - influence sleep in people.
