Abstract

The focus on this chapter is discussion of indications for tracheostomy placement in both the acute and the elective (operating room) setting. Our experience as the Otolaryngology service on the acute airway team at a Level I trauma center is unique in that our algorithm incorporates tracheostomy planning in an acute setting. In the acute setting, discussion will focus on the key principles in establishing a surgical airway through a tracheostomy. In the elective setting, the indications for tracheostomy placement as part of airway management in surgical procedures as well as the indications for placement at beside in the ICU will be discussed. The risks/benefits/alternatives of tracheostomy placement will be discussed within this chapter.
