Abstract
Recommendations and the rationale for considering the use of carotid endarterectomy in a broad range of clinical settings are described. Included are recommendations related to asymptomatic patients, patients with carotid distribution or vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks, and patients who have had one or more cerebrovascular accidents.
