Abstract
An attempt was made to investigate associations between visual impairment and visually impairing eye diseases on the one hand, and subsequent major morbidity and mortality on the other, in the Medicare population over 75 years. Cohorts were drawn from HCFA 5% Medicare claims files. Although no causal relationships were determined, earlier findings were confirmed and valuable hypotheses regarding health effects of vision loss among the elderly were generated.
