In vivo biocompatibility evaluation of surface modifications to rotary ventricular assist devices

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

In vivo biocompatibility evaluation of surface modifications to rotary ventricular assist devices (VAD) was performed. Flow cytometric measures of platelet and leukocyte activation and aggregation were applied in 46 bovines implanted with one of two different rotary VAD in which significant modifications to the blood-contacting surfaces of the pumps were to be evaluated. Statistical differences between animals with different coatings applied on each pump were evaluated by ANOVA with post-hoc Newman-Keuls test with significance attained for p<0.05. Platelet activation was significantly lower in calves with MPC coated EvaHeart pumps compared to DLC coated pumps.
