Abstract
Erectile dysfunction is a common problem which can severely impact the quality of life for the patient as well as his partner. Although medical treatment options are available, they are not without treatment failures and adverse effects. Surgical implantation of a penile prosthesis, which allows for a rigid erection and which restores the ability for penetrative sexual intercourse, is the definitive treatment for erectile dysfunction when these treatments are undesired, unsuccessful or contraindicated. Expertise in the surgical technique for implantation is required, especially in the context of a reconstructed neophallus in men with a history of severe penile loss, congenital anomaly or gender reassignment. Obtaining informed consent and providing realistic post-operative expectations is critical to managing these patients.
