Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that often coexists with impaired metabolism. In this chapter, we focus on interactions between obesity, OSA and metabolic disorders, and treatment effects of OSA on metabolism. Specifically, we will discuss (1) pathogenic role of obesity and visceral obesity in developing OSA, (2) evidence showing that OSA impairs glucose and lipid metabolism independent of obesity, (3) treatment effects of OSA on metabolic outcomes from randomized controlled trials, and (4) clinical implications of these findings and future directions.
