Abstract
Immunophilin ligands are potent, neuroprotective molecules with high selectivity for multiple FKBPs. They protect against excitotoxic lesions of hippocampal and motor neurons, as well as lesions of the nigral striatal dopaminergic pathway. They stimulate functional regrowth of damaged sciatic, cortical cholinergic, dopamine and 5-HT neurons. There may be multiple mechanisms of action to account for these neurotrophic activities.
