Imaging neuronal biochemistry by emission computed tomography: focus on neuroreceptors

The ability to non-invasively measure neurotransmitter receptors in man by emission computed tomography has the potential to (1) improve understanding of the biochemical basis of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders; (2) monitor drug action by directly measuring changes in receptor occupancy; and (3) lead to improved knowledge of the physiology of neurotransmitter systems by monitoring changes in receptor occupancy as a result of altered neurotransmitter release. James Frost describes selective ligands currenly available to image neuroreceptors and their subtypes and their use in elucidating biochemical events in health and disease.
