Abstract

This study evaluated manifest psychological symptom levels associated with the complaint of hypertension among pri manly black patients of lower socioeconomic status. Scores on the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) showed that patients who presented with a complaint of hypertension reported significantly lower levels of distress than did other patients in a control group. This self-report information was subsequently confirmed by data from medical chart review
