Abstract

The rates of living kidney donation have been continually improving, yet only a small percentage of wait-listed patients receive a living donor kidney. As a result of advancements in various subspecialties in medicine, individuals that would have been considered ineligible for living donation, now represent a potential segment of the donor pool. In this chapter, we explore the advancements that have led to utilisation of organs from such donors with the high risk conditions such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B & C infection, previous malignancy, and elevated cardiometabolic risk, current experience and outcomes, along with risks associated with donation in this setting.
