Abstract
Patients in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) are at risk for thromboses due to their cardiac anatomy or because of iatrogenic procedures (e.g., cardiac bypass; catheterization). There are several anticoagulants used in the care of pediatric cardiac patients, each with unique mechanisms of action, methods of monitoring, and most have antidotes for rapid correction of anticoagulation.
