Abstract
Combination therapy for HIV can reduce viral loads to undetectable levels, and although there was once optimism that undetectable viral loads would lead to viral eradication, studies have shown that HIV persists in some cell types. As a result, patients on antiretroviral therapy can expect to continue treating their HIV as a chronic illness, and are cautioned that those who stop taking their drugs may experience a viral rebound. When people are on effective antiviral therapy, the latent virus in the body is not causing more damage to the immune system.
